Appalachian Services® is a trip-by-trip personal transportation service providing both one-time and multi-trip contract transportation for individuals or small groups. We are neither a taxi nor a limousine service. Our mission is to provide dependable, safe, and affordable transportation and support services to hikers, backpackers, and other clients.
We began in 2001 as a support and transportation service for hikers on the Appalachian Trail as well as shorter trails in, or near, the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. In 2003 we expanded into providing non-emergency transportation to non-hikers for things like doctor/dentist visits, physical therapy sessions, cancer treatments, and trips to/from airports and bus stations. In 2005 we added providing long-distance transportation to those who do not like the hassle of flying or the long delays encountered when traveling by bus. We also included relocating vehicles for both hikers and those who are moving but do not wish to, or are unable to, drive their vehicle to their new residence. Also in 2005 we expanded our services to hikers on the Bartram, Benton MacKaye, and Mountains-To-Sea Trails. In 2012, we offered support and transportation services to cyclists (bicycles). During the 2013 hiking season we entered into a co-op agreement with Bill’s Wheels of Georgia and Bill’s Wheels – Gatlinburg, TN in order to provide more reliable, consistent support to hikers on the AT during high-volume periods and winter storms. Even more services are planned for the near future. If there is any service you need that is not listed here please let us know and we will accommodate your needs if at all possible.

We have been considered an “all-year” service provider since 2001. As such we were available to provide any/all of our services each month of the year. Unfortunately that availability needed to be changed in September 2013 due to a medical condition affecting an out-of-state family member. After over a year away we resumed providing all hiker support services on 28DEC2014 and intend to continue doing so throughout the 2015 hiking season.
For a list of holidays we will be closed this year see the list posted below. We are closed each Sunday until approximately 2PM.
We will pick clients up at just about any hour, however extremely early or extremely late shuttles are priced differently than “standard” shuttles. For more information regarding this please click on the “Fees And Rates” tab at the top of this page.
We are more than happy to help hikers out when plans fall through, they get the sudden urge to hike, or have an injury / illness that needs attention and there is a need to contact us at the last-minute. Since there is no way for us to plan ahead for these things we often have to change our personal plans, re-direct resources, or miss a meal. We will gladly make this accommodation if possible, however please have the common courtesy, and decency, to wait for us to get to you after calling for our assistance. Fuel is expensive, and during the season time is at a premium. “Catching a ride” with someone else, or simply disappearing before we (or any other shuttle provider) can get there, is rude and unthoughtful. Please don’t treat our desire to help you out any differently than you would like to be treated under the same circumstances.

Our primary service area is from the Atlanta, GA airport (ATL) to Erwin, TN. If time and resources allow we also offer transportation to/from Damascus, VA, Shenandoah National Park, and Harpers Ferry, WV as well as most points in-between.
In addition to providing trail-related transportation in the areas mentioned above, we also provide shuttle service to/from the northern third of Florida or other areas of equal distance (approximately 450 miles) from the Great Smoky Mountains National Park or Amicalola Falls State Park.

Appalachian Services is one of the few hiker support and shuttle services that provides services to/from areas not immediately adjacent to, or within seventy-five (75) miles or so of, the Appalachian Trail for both hikers and non-hikers.
In addition to providing trail-related transportation in an area ranging from Atlanta, GA to Harpers Ferry, WV, we also provide shuttle service to/from the northern third of Florida or other areas of equal distance (approximately 450 miles) from the Great Smoky Mountains National Park or Amicalola Falls State Park. For example, if you live in Mobile, AL, Jackson, MS, Memphis, TN, or Cincinnati, OH and are planning a thru-hike we can pick you up near your home (at a very public place), then drop you off at Amicalola Falls or Springer Mountain. Of course that would apply to transportation from the trail to a public location near your residence at the end of your hike as well.
If you are a non-hiking individual and need long-distance transportation within the area described above please use the “Contact Us” link above to give us a brief description of your needs. We will get back to you for/with more information ASAP.
In order for us to give you an accurate rate quote we need the following information.
- Your name, phone number you can be reached at the most (cellphone number preferred), and your email address.
- The date you wish to be picked up.
- The exact location of your pick-up. This includes the city, state, name or description of the location, and the physical address of that location.
- How many people we would be transporting.
- How many canines, if any, would be traveling with you.
Once shuttle arrangements are made we also need your physical home address, the name of an emergency contact, the contact’s relationship to you (spouse, parent, friend, etc.), and that contact’s phone number.
Appalachian Services now provides support services to cyclists for both local and long-distance trips and/or events. We currently are able transport either 1 or 2 bicycles, however that will be expanded to 4 bicycles in the near future. Other services include, but are not limited to, road-side food or refreshments, non-emergency transportation to hospitals or urgent care facilities, “flag” or “chase” car services, and urgent equipment replacement for things such as inner tubes, tires, pumps, brake pads, etc. If you need a bicycle part replaced please be as specific as possible regarding bicycle make and model, size, part number if known, full description of the item(s), and other pertinent information.
We also offer vehicle relocations so you do not have to make a “loop” trip if that is not desired. This would enable you to both bike away from, and toward, your vehicle.
