Appalachian Services has temporarily suspended its hiker support services due to the death of an immediate family member who was integral to its proper operation. In the interim we are attempting to complete a book we began compiling in 2014 chronicling hiker experiences on, and around, the Appalachian Trail. For more information regarding this book, and/or to submit information regarding your own experiences on the AT, please go to https://TalesFromTheAT.wordpress.com.

Mountain Crossings at Neel Gap
As many fans of the Appalachian Trail are already aware, the release of Bill Bryson’s popular book A Walk in the Woods is just around the corner. Labor Day marks the premiere of the movie adaptation of one of the most well known books written about the AT. Though Bryson did not successfully thru hike the Appalachian Trail, in his book he excellently captured the spirit of the trail and the lives of thru hikers in a most hilarious way. In the making of the movie, the cast and crew went to great lengths to pay the proper homage and to bring to light those who keep the spirit of the AT bright and shining. Many iconic stops along the Appalachian Trail were used as filming locations including Amicaloa Lodge and Springer Mountain. Last summer, well over a year ago, the crew came up to Neel Gap to film the main…

The “A Walk In The Woods” movie is scheduled to be released Wednesday, September 02, 2015. This is the movie version of the famous, or perhaps I should say infamous, best-selling book of the same title written by Bill Bryson. The movie stars, among others, Robert Redford in the role of Bill Bryson, Nick Nolte as Katz, and Emma Thompson as Bill Bryson’s Wife.
Here is a reblog of a wonderful post. I hope everyone enjoys reading it. 🙂
Last week as I went on a walk with my son through our neighborhood I pulled out my camera and started taking pictures of everything that caught my eye. Lots of beautiful trees, flowers and built up piles of fallen leaves. Oh how I love the natural beauty.
As I looked down at the sidewalk something in the cement caught my eye. they were so small that I almost missed them, but there they were. An imprint of a leaf. Several of them actually, leaves no longer there but the imprints remained. How long had they been there? Who knows, could be years. All I knew was that these leaves had once fallen at this precise place leaving their mark, proving their existence, leaving a lasting impression in stone. So I took a picture of this imprint as it got me thinking of my own.
What lasting impression will I leave behind? Years from now will…

…out under the sky. No ceiling obscures my gaze of the heavens. There are no walls to shield me from wildlife. There I am witness to unfurling miles of forest. I tackle durable mountains, am lulled by rolling hills, and rest by springs of water. I am alive, in the wild, moving, breathing. My soul expands in the out-of-doors. Limits fall away even as summits rear themselves; they call, even as they provoke — “Are you up for the task?” I respond by embracing them with effort and sweat, slips and falls, muscle stretch and ache. My recompense is in catching my breath, sleeping under the stars, being awed by the views. Such endeavor brings reward — gratitude — and joy!
Merry Christmas to hikers and backpackers and lovers of the wild everywhere!

“When my three-year-old son started rattling off a list of dinosaur names I’d never heard of, let alone pronounce, I thought he was some kind of genius – a parasaurawhat now? “It’s a parasaurolophus.” But I quickly realized that he is not the only kid with an impressive vocabulary of prehistoric animals. Many on social media are remarking on how their young children, nieces or nephews know so much about the cretaceous period. Well, it turns out that’s thanks to a popular kids TV show on PBS – a Jim Henson production called Dinosaur Train. The show’s host, world-renowned paleontologist Scott Sampson, who grew up in Vancouver but lives in the U.S., has written a book that links the growing disconnect between children in the digital age and nature with the global sustainability crisis. The Vancouver Sun spoke to Sampson to find out more about his book “How to Raise a Wild Child.” The following interview is edited for space.” Read More Here
Appalachian Services is a family friendly support service. We encourage families to get their children involved in the outdoors whether it be hiking, camping, having a picnic in the park on a warm day, or simply observing nature in their own backyards. Our founder has spent his life in the outdoors going on camping and backpacking trips with his family and church groups, participating in the Boy Scouts of America™ from the Webelo stage thru Boy Scouts to what was originally called “Explorer Scout” (now a part of the “Venturing” program), then later serving as a Scout Master. He has also served in the U.S. military, U.S. Civil Defense, and as the Captain of a county search and rescue team which operated primarily in remote rural areas. Much of this knowledge has been passed on to our staff so we can all work with new campers and hikers, training them how to take care of themselves in wilderness settings (mentally and physically), establish proper campsites, and participate in “Leave No Trace“.
Because of our concern for family involvement in the outdoors, and the younger generations need to become acquainted with fun yet environmentally safe practices, we will begin posting articles regarding these things, and/or links to information about how to introduce children and older non-hiking family members to the outdoors, basics of family hiking/camping, and other related programs. Please help us in this effort by providing us with links you may come across which would be helpful in this endeavor.
